“Accident” night explosion fire!Seven people were killed and more than 30 injured
At least seven people were killed after an explosion and a fire broke out at Saint Laurent de-la-Salanque in The Pyrenees-Orientales region of France at around 1:30 am local time on February 14.Two children were among them. More than 30 others were injured.Overnight, a powerful explosion ripped through a main road in Saint-Laurent de La Salenque, about 15 kilometers from Perpignan, setting fire to two-story buildings on both sides of the street, France’s Info-france news agency reported.Several fire engines intervened overnight to secure the site and evacuate residents, some of whom the city government said would be relocated.The fire was brought under control by noon on The 14th. At least seven people were killed and 37 injured, but this is still incomplete.Some of the injured are thought to have suffered from smoke inhalation. One man was seriously injured after jumping out of a window to escape the fire and was initially taken to hospital in Perpignan before being transferred to Montpellier for treatment. Another missing person has not been found.The prosecutor, Jean-David Cavaille, said an investigation was under way to determine the cause of the blast.A grocery store or fast food restaurant on the ground floor of the building may have had natural gas canisters, and it’s not clear if that was the source of the explosion or exacerbated it.The Centre for Gendarmerie Forensics (IRCGN) and fire experts have been mobilised to investigate, but the scene is complicated by the risk of collapse of one of the affected buildings.The French interior minister, Gerald Darmanin, rushed to the scene.Gerard Darmanen said it was a “real tragedy” and expressed support for the families and their loved ones on behalf of the country.Jean Castex, the French prime minister, expressed regret at the serious accident that left “seven dead and 37 injured” and offered his condolences to the victims and their families.
